Drive and Performance 7.0/10

Behind the wheel, you’ll be aware of the Toyota’s girth around every corner, with a noticeable amount of body roll and light, somewhat inaccurate steering. Navigating in tight spaces and placing the Sequoia within a lane can feel daunting. On the plus side, the SUV’s pliant suspension results in a pleasant and smooth ride quality. The brakes are strong and bring the Sequoia to a stop reasonably quickly, but the brake pedal has a disconcertingly squishy feel to it.

A twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine and an electric motor is standard, putting out a combined 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. All Sequoias are equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard in all models except the TRD Pro, which comes standard with four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is optional in all other trims.

You’ll rarely find yourself short on power with the Sequoia. The hybrid powertrain’s electric motor allows for near-instantaneous torque delivery off the line, and its refined gas-electric operation delivers linear power across the rev range as needed. Whether on a freeway, a dirt trail or an urban street, the Toyota’s hybrid system always feels vivacious. The 10-speed automatic transmission pairs well with the other components and delivers consistently quick and smooth shifts.

Fuel Economy 9.2/10

The Sequoia has good fuel economy figures for a large SUV. Rear-wheel-drive models get an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel-drive versions get 19/22 mpg city/highway.

Interior 6.6/10

The Sequoia’s interior is solidly built and has a tough, blocky aesthetic that reflects its rough-and-tumble performance attributes. There are some visible hard plastics that make it feel less upscale than some rivals, but higher-end models are more luxurious thanks to semi-aniline leather upholstery and open-pore wood trim. Seven to eight people can fit in the Sequoia, depending on configuration. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and there’s plenty of head- and legroom available. Forward visibility is good, though the Sequoia’s thick rear pillars hinder the driver’s sight lines. The second-row seats are firmer and flatter than those in front, but are still spacious and comfy enough to accommodate adults on longer trips. The third row is cramped and best left to kids.

The Sequoia has less cargo room than most large SUV rivals. It provides between 11.5 and 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row (depending on how the third-row seats are positioned), 49 cubic feet with the third-row seats folded and 86.9 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded down. A high liftover height and rear seats that don’t fold flat further hinder the Sequoia’s cargo-hauling abilities. A hands-free power liftgate is available

Value 7.5/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia has an average value rating for the large SUV segment. We determine value based on the vehicle’s estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle’s MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety N/A

The Toyota Sequoia hasn’t been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but it does come with a long list of driver-assistance features. These include pedestrian and cyclist detection, a surround-view camera system and blind-spot monitoring.

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats. The second- and third-row middle seats feature an upper tether anchor.

Quality and Reliability 75.0/100

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia has a predicted reliability score of 75 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Critics’ Rating 6.6/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia receives a critics’ rating that is below average for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.
