Butadiene, a colorless gas

Is a non-corrosive, flammable, colorless gas smelling faintly of petrol, obtained from the C4 fraction in the cracking process of naphtha. It is slightly soluble in water, as well as in methanol and ethanol and soluble in the commoner organic solvents, such as acetone, ether, benzene and cyclohexane.

The main applications of butadiene are synthetic rubber (SBR, SBS, thermoplastic rubber, etc.), widely used in producing shoe soles, tyres and other parts for the car industry, adhesives and sealants, asphalt and polymer modification and compounds for endless purposes.

What is 1,3-butadiene?

1,3-Butadiene is a colorless, flammable gas with a characteristic odor that condenses readily under pressure. It is an unsaturated hydrocarbon of great industrial importance.

The product has a strong tendency to polymerize, therefore a stabilizer (TBC) is added during the production process. It is recommended to avoid storage temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius.

What is 1,3-butadiene used for?

Butadiene is used as a synthetic rubber, for example, in vehicle tires, as an additive in the rubberized backing of carpeting, or in the soles of sports shoes to ensure elasticity and durability. It is also needed in the electronics industry, in household appliances and in the construction sector. In addition, it is an important intermediate for the production of rubber and plastics for applications such as paper finishing, disposable gloves, latex mattresses, conveyor belts, etc.

1,3-Butadiene is an essential component of styrene-butadiene rubber and polybutadiene rubber (in vehicle tires, shoe soles), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and adiponitrile (in electronic devices and housings) and in products of the consumer goods and construction industry (e.g. latex mattresses, disposable gloves).

Where is 1,3-butadiene produced and how is it transported?

In our state-of-the-art C4 Verbund, we process various raw material streams such as crude-C4 or FCC C4 (fluid catalytic cracking C4) from steam crackers or refineries. The product is produced at Evonik’s sites in Marl and Antwerp. We offer our customers the following means of transport for butadiene: rail tank cars, tank trucks, containers, ocean-going vessels and inland tankers.
